Apple owns the door
Everyone says Apple is losing the AI war. It isn't even playing the same game. It owns the door — and whoever owns the door decides what's behind it.
Everyone keeps saying Apple is losing the AI war. No frontier model. Falling behind OpenAI, behind Google, behind Anthropic. Late and lost.
I think Apple has the best seat in the house.
Apple isn’t playing the same game as OpenAI or Anthropic. It’s true — Apple doesn’t own a frontier model. But it doesn’t need to. It owns something better: the door.
A model is a room. Doesn’t matter how good the room is if nobody can get to it. To reach anyone, you need a way in — a website, an app, or an operating system. Anyone can build the first two. Almost no one owns the last.
Apple does. So does Google. Maybe Microsoft. That’s the whole list.
And whoever owns the door decides what’s behind it.
Apple has done this before. It never built a search engine. It just picked one. Google pays it around $20 billion a year to stay the default in Safari — not to be good, just to be the one Apple chose.
It can do the same with models. Pick the best one. Wrap it into iCloud. Swap it next year when a better one shows up. Apple doesn’t have to make the tokens. It can buy them — from whichever vendor is winning that month.
Because that’s where models are heading. Toward infrastructure. Like electricity, like cloud computing. Bought, not revered.
People forget that selling to people is nothing like selling to companies. A company buys on ROI. Show better numbers, win the contract.
A person doesn’t work that way. A person buys what’s already in their hand. Distribution is the whole game.
And Apple owns the best distribution on earth. Plus the things no app can reach: the system underneath, your personal context, and a privacy story no one else can tell with a straight face.
A website you leave in a click. An app you delete and forget. But an operating system is a house you live in.
Nobody moves out because someone built a nicer room down the street.
