I‘m an engineering manager leading a team of around 60 talented engineers at Shopee, building a better e-commerce experience for hundreds of millions of users across the globe.
I started making money by freelancing when I was still a college student. I managed to pay for my entire college education building website using PHP (for that reason, it‘s the best language in the world, to me).
After college, I couldn‘t convince myself into a 9-to-5 job, so I ended up becoming a co-founder of 2 startups (both failed miserably). Despite the failures, I came out of these advantures stronger, learned so many things about not only technology, but also business.
Realizing building a business might not work out for me, I decided to change course and came to Singapore to pursue a Ph.D. at NUS. Only to find out research is not my cup of tea. While some people may consider the 4 years of me wondering among a bunch of computer scientists and producing almost zero decent research a waste of time, I myself see it as a valuable experience. I got myself exposed to all kinds of novel ideas, research methodologies, and most importantly, a large pool of talented people.
Today, I’m leading an engineering team and working on challenging problems everyday to empower hundreds of millions of users who shop or make a living on Shopee.
